Somatic Awareness & Movement

If you're feeling disconnected from your body, stuck in your head, or having difficulty moving through big emotions, somatic awareness and movement can be a powerful place to begin. Emotions don’t just live in our minds—they live in our bodies. Through somatic work, we begin to understand how and where emotions arise physically, and how to meet them with curiosity and care.

This approach gently supports you in reconnecting with the body’s inner landscape. By noticing sensations, movements, and tensions, we learn to work with the body—not against it. Over time, this practice helps us acknowledge big emotions, listen to what they may be communicating, and release what no longer needs to be held.

My work is deeply informed by Somatic Experiencing®, a body-based trauma resolution method developed by Dr. Peter Levine. This approach recognizes that trauma and stress are not just stored as memories, but as physiological patterns that can become “stuck” in the nervous system. Through slow, attuned attention, we begin to gently unwind these patterns, restore a felt sense of safety, and support the body’s natural ability to regulate and recover.

As we begin to feel more at home in our bodies and more comfortable tracking big emotions, we can begin to explore how these emotions want to move. A practice I integrate into sessions draws from the Tamalpa Life/Art Process, developed by Anna Halprin. This expressive arts approach invites us to use movement and dance as a way to give form to what the body is holding—allowing emotions to speak, shift, and ultimately transform. Through guided movement, we create space for deeper communication between the body and brain, which helps us feel more centered, balanced, and whole.

In sessions, somatic awareness and movement help us:

  • Build capacity to stay present with difficult feelings

  • Reconnect with signals of safety, pleasure, and aliveness

  • Bridge the gap between the thinking mind and the feeling body

This work is not about “fixing” or analyzing. It’s about learning how to listen—to the subtle language of the body, to the messages within our sensations, and to the wisdom that often lives beneath the surface. With compassionate support, somatic awareness and expressive movement offer a pathway toward emotional clarity, nervous system balance, and a more grounded, resilient connection to yourself.
